The
record, unofficially, to which we refer is that related to the
minimalist musical performances; characteristic of this musical
philosophy is to proceed to minor variations, sometimes
imperceptible, although more often than not much different from the
starting point (as happens to Steve Reich and Terry Riley) or even
still remains (is the case La Monte Young).
The parameter of the record is the duration of the performance: the pretender to the title in aeternum is the aforementioned La Monte Young, author of the "Theatre of Eternal Music" (fact) and "Dream house" which last, the gallery of Harrison Street New York, lasted continuously for six years, from 1979 to 1985.
The mystic New York but I would put it out of competition because, rather than moving to small deviations, his works are still literally: it takes only two minutes of listening to have fully appreciated the aesthetic creation. Dream house and The Tortoise And His Dreams Journeys are available on vinyl: the liner notes warn that the physical medium only allows 30 minutes of listening, but finished the front you can turn back your needles, ad libitum ... in reality ', a continuum of static electronic frequencies or the same electronic frequencies with more 'notes and fixed long trumpet and trombone, with the addition, in the second case, of Indian vocals equally fixed and static, after two minutes lead to serious risk of scratching the disc with a screwdriver.
Because one thing is the theoretical concept, quite another the aesthetic: the theory may deserve ink but not staff paper. It 'sa bit like Klavierstucke of Stockhausen, a trivial sample durations, pauses, modes of attack and sustain of the sound (the author claims to have found even he does not remember how many new ways of attack sound at the piano) : well, good, but 'going to teach to play the piano, let it be the composition!
Hence the world record category minimalism the check within the Flaming Lips; it is not conceptually minimalist composers, except to the extent that the whole rock music is minimalist, as early as the harmonic scheme of blues (ababcba).
Specifically the Flaming Lips have composed "I've found a star on the ground" for a period of SIX HOURS.
It is not the first time that these guys amaze Oklahoma; is part of their small legend that began to ring with tools stolen in a church, but stood out immediately for the noblest virtues. Explain their sound is not simple: they can satisfy the nostalgia of early Pink Floyd (no one else deserves to be called the heir of Syd Barret if not their founder Wayne Coyne), but it could disturb the faithful of Pink Floyd later with less orthodox components of their music, for which it is not exaggeration to bother Frank Zappa, as are organic to the period of late 80's when they started with the noisy Jesus and Mary Chain, My Bloody Valentine, Butthole Surfers.
Their previous eccentricity has been publishing Zaireeka, engraved on four different cd to sound simultaneously ... virtually impossible to hear (and went out to Warner Bros, not for production from the cellar). I've found a star on the ground, released in 2011 and available only via downloading instead you hear all right: the only difficulty is to find six hours, but his listening alters the perception of time, you hear the term of song, the minutes run surprisingly dozens and then hundreds (experience curious if you listen on the go). The construction of the piece is not simply given by an expansion of the elements that normally would be part of an album of 40 minutes, frazionarlo in 36 pieces of 10 minutes would make no sense; There are many issues, not many, but remains involved by minimum differences, epic, slow but lying on a carpet with a lively rhythmic iridescent rich batucada.
The difference with the classical works of minimalism and 'right here: while with the asceticism of La Monte Young will remain firm in mystical contemplation and with Terry Riley and Steve Reich in 30 minutes you make a beautiful journey of 15 meters, with I' I found a star on the ground in 60 minutes (perceived) I have traveled 600 kilometers.
